Course Description

Neurodegenerative conditions are among the most complex and rapidly growing challenges clinicians face today. With over fifty million people currently living with dementia and projections reaching one hundred fifty million by 2050, the gap between what conventional medicine offers and what patients actually need has never been wider. Functional approaches grounded in current neuroscience are not a supplement to care, they are becoming the frontier of it.

This course delivers a clinically grounded, research-informed framework for understanding neurodegeneration across conditions including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and CTE. Clinicians gain insight into the functional connectome, biomarkers of cognitive decline, pupillary light reflex as a clinical assessment tool, the neostriatum's role in motor and cognitive gating, and emerging evidence in regenerative neuroscience. You will leave with a broader and more precise clinical lens for the patients who need it most.

What you’ll learn:

  • Analyze why standard cognitive tests may not reflect true regional brain function
  • Identify basal ganglia and neostriatal mechanisms underlying bradykinesia and decline
  • Apply the pupillary light reflex as a biomarker for concussion and neurodegeneration
  • Distinguish the structural pathology of CTE, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's disease
  • Evaluate emerging regenerative research and its implications for functional clinical care

More About This Course

Neurodegeneration represents one of the most urgent and underserved frontiers in clinical neuroscience. Conditions like Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and chronic traumatic encephalopathy are no longer the exclusive domain of neurology subspecialties. Clinicians across functional neurology, chiropractic neurology, physical therapy, and integrative medicine are increasingly encountering patients in the early and middle stages of cognitive and motor decline, often years before a formal diagnosis. Understanding the underlying neuroscience is not optional for those who want to deliver meaningful care at this level.

This course builds the kind of neurobiological literacy that separates a clinician who manages symptoms from one who understands mechanisms. Participants gain a working understanding of the functional connectome and why standard cognitive testing may not accurately reflect the region of the brain actually being assessed. The course examines basal ganglia circuitry, neostriatal gating, and the clinical significance of the nigra in Parkinson's pathophysiology. It explores tau accumulation and beta amyloid pathology in the context of CTE and Alzheimer's disease, draws critical connections between concussion history and long term neurodegenerative risk, and introduces the pupillary light reflex as a precise, accessible biomarker of autonomic and cortical integrity.

Emerging research featured in this course includes findings from human pluripotent stem cell modeling, advances in xenogenic-free neurological disease models, murine studies on neostriatal regeneration, and the clinical implications of far infrared ceramic technology in neuroplasticity and passive neuromodulation. These are not hypothetical concepts. They represent the direction neurodegenerative research is actively moving, and clinicians who understand this landscape will be better positioned to guide their patients toward evidence-informed interventions.

This course is designed for licensed clinicians in functional neurology, chiropractic, physical therapy, and related disciplines who want a more sophisticated understanding of neurodegeneration and its clinical implications. It is particularly relevant for those who see patients with concussion history, movement disorders, cognitive complaints, or autonomic dysregulation.

Components

Educational Syllabus

  • The Brain Under Pressure and What Neurodegeneration Actually Looks Like
    • Every neurodegenerative condition presents differently, and standard functional testing often misses what is actually happening at the regional level. This topic establishes a whole-brain framework for understanding why individual variation demands individualized clinical thinking.
  • Circuits That Control Everything in the Basal Ganglia and Neostriatal System
    • The neostriatum, globus pallidus, and nigra form a gating system that regulates motor output and cognitive reserve. This topic unpacks how breakdown in this circuitry drives bradykinesia and decline, and why these mechanisms matter for clinical intervention.
  • Concussion as a Neurodegenerative Precursor and the Long Game Clinicians Must Understand
    • A history of head injury significantly elevates the risk of later neurodegenerative change, often measurable in white matter and ventricle volume years before symptoms emerge. This topic examines the structural and vascular biomarkers that connect concussion to cognitive decline.
  • New Frontiers in Neuroregeneration and Research That Is Changing Clinical Thinking
    • From xenogenic-free human cell modeling to neostriatal regrowth in Parkinsonian animal models, this topic presents the cutting edge of regenerative neuroscience and what it means for clinicians working with patients who have limited pharmacological options.
