Description
This 25-hour course, taught by Dr. David Traster, provides an in-depth exploration of the structure, function, and clinical relevance of the basal ganglia. Participants will study the basal ganglia’s role in movement, learning, memory, and neuroplasticity, with a focus on diagnosing and rehabilitating movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, dystonia, Tourette’s syndrome, essential tremor, and myoclonic disorders. Emphasis is placed on clinical assessments, treatment strategies, neurotransmitter pathways, and the evolving role of deep brain stimulation in neurorehabilitation.
What you’ll learn:
- Understand the anatomy, physiology, and neurotransmitter systems of the basal ganglia.
- Analyze the role of basal ganglia dysfunction in movement disorders such as Parkinson’s and Huntington’s disease.
- Perform clinical assessments and apply functional rehab strategies for basal ganglia-related conditions.
- Integrate advanced knowledge of plasticity, habit learning, and limbic modulation into neurorehabilitation plans.
