Course Description

Complex neurological cases rarely fit a single diagnosis, and the clinicians who achieve the best outcomes are those who approach every examination as a dynamic, probabilistic investigation. The challenge is rarely knowledge alone; it is synthesizing anatomy, physiology, and real-time patient response into a coherent clinical strategy.

This course, led by Carrick Institute faculty member Lynn Carlson, DC, DACNB, equips clinicians with the functional mindset and examination framework needed to identify neuroanatomical targets, calibrate therapeutic intensity, and monitor patient response with precision. One hour of CE credit.

What you’ll learn:

  • Apply a dynamic functional examination framework to complex neurological cases
  • Identify longitudinal neuroanatomical lesion levels using comparative clinical findings
  • Use diagnostic therapies to test nervous system viability and guide treatment selection
  • Calibrate frequency, intensity, and duration of intervention to each patient's metabolic capacity
  • Monitor patient response to care using autonomic and functional markers in real time

More About This Course

Functional neurology demands more than diagnostic accuracy. It requires a dynamic, integrative clinical mindset that allows a clinician to engage with each patient's nervous system in real time, synthesize competing findings, and build a targeted, individualized treatment strategy. This course, Thinking Functionally: Clinical Mindset, addresses that exact demand and serves as an essential foundation for any clinician pursuing advanced functional neurological examination skills, chiropractic neurology CE credits, or deeper clinical competency in neurorehabilitation and receptor-based care.

The course guides clinicians through the layered reasoning process that underlies a high-quality functional neurological examination. You will explore the concept of central integrated state, understand how to identify longitudinal levels of neuroanatomical lesion, and develop a systematic framework for evaluating whether a system requires increased frequency of firing, attenuation, or stabilization. Critically, the course introduces diagnostic therapies as a real-time examination strategy, using multimodal stimulation to probe nervous system function, identify viable pathways, and differentiate physiological dysfunction from ablative pathology. Clinical reasoning around metabolic capacity, fatigue-ability ratios, and the appropriate frequency, intensity, and duration of neurological intervention is also addressed, giving clinicians a practical scaffold for building safe and effective care protocols.

This course is designed for licensed chiropractors, chiropractic neurologists, and other healthcare clinicians who are integrating functional neurology principles into their examination and treatment approach, whether they are beginning that integration or refining years of practice. It is equally valuable for clinicians preparing for advanced Carrick Institute modules, including the comprehensive Principles of Neurological Examination course.

Lynn Carlson, DC, DACNB, has been a member of the Carrick Institute faculty since 2009 and practices at Carolina Functional Neurology Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. Her clinical work spans complex neurological cases including traumatic brain injury, vestibular dysfunction, chronic pain, and movement disorders. Her teaching reflects the same precision and integrative reasoning she applies every day with her patients.

Components

Educational Syllabus

  • The Functional Mindset That Changes Everything
    • Understand what separates a functional neurological examination from a standard diagnostic approach. Explore the probabilistic nature of nerve pathways, central integrated state, and why no two patients present identically.
  • Pinpointing Dysfunction Across the Neuraxis
    • Learn to systematically identify longitudinal levels of neuroanatomical lesion, from cortex to receptor, and determine whether dysfunction reflects physiological suppression, excitation, or structural compromise requiring alternative pathways.
  • Diagnostic Therapies as Real-Time Examination Tools
    • Discover how to use multimodal stimulation during the examination itself to probe viable pathways, differentiate functional from ablative lesions, and uncover therapeutic entry points that guide individualized treatment planning.
  • Dosing the Nervous System for Maximum Neuroplasticity
    • Master the clinical reasoning behind frequency, intensity, and duration of neurological intervention. Learn to identify metabolic capacity, recognize early fatigue markers, and progress treatment protocols safely and effectively.
