Course Description
This 25-hour advanced clinical program, taught by Professor Frederick Carrick, equips healthcare professionals with expert-level skills in examining and treating neurological dysfunctions through eye movement analysis. Designed for clinicians managing traumatic brain injury, concussion, neurodegenerative disorders, and vestibular dysfunctions, the course teaches hands-on bedside assessments without the need for high-tech equipment. Participants will gain mastery in evaluating both voluntary and reflexive eye movements, localizing neurological lesions, and developing personalized, evidence-based rehabilitation strategies. The program includes a flipped classroom model, continuous post-course education, and access to research via the Carrick Institute library and Medline.
What you’ll learn:
- Perform advanced bedside eye movement exams including saccades, pursuits, optokinetics, and gaze fixation.
- Interpret clinical signs related to cortical, brainstem, cerebellar, and subcortical dysfunctions.
- Develop treatment plans for neurodegenerative diseases and TBI using eye movement-based localization.
- Apply functional neurology principles to identify compensatory strategies and create custom rehab interventions.
- Assess brainstem generators, pulse-step mismatches, smooth pursuit pathways, and vestibular-ocular integration.
