Edward Gibson

Ted (Edward) Gibson, PhD, is a Professor of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at MIT, where he has taught since 1993. With a background in math, computer science, and computational linguistics, he earned his PhD from Carnegie Mellon University. His research spans all aspects of human language—its structure, meaning, and use across diverse languages. He has published extensively in top scientific journals and is known for proposing that language evolves to meet local cultural needs and minimize cognitive effort. A former Olympic rower, he is married to neuroscientist Ev Fedorenko, with whom he frequently collaborates.
