About

Margaret Naeser

Dr. Margaret A. Naeser is a neuroscientist and research professor specializing in neurorehabilitation, neuroplasticity, and brain recovery. She serves as a Research Professor of Neurology at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and conducts research at the Boston VA Medical Center.

Dr. Naeser’s research has spanned more than four decades, with early work focused on the neuroanatomy of stroke and language disorders (aphasia) using CT and MRI imaging. Her later work has expanded into neuromodulation techniques, including transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM), with the goal of improving brain function and recovery following neurological injury.

Since 2009, her research has explored the use of red and near-infrared light therapies applied to the brain to support recovery in conditions such as traumatic brain injury, stroke, dementia, PTSD, and other neurological disorders. Her work also examines changes in functional brain connectivity and how targeted interventions may enhance neural network function.

Dr. Naeser has received long-standing funding from the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications. She also serves on the editorial board of Photobiomodulation, Photomedicine and Laser Surgery and is a Fellow of the American Society for Lasers in Medicine and Surgery.

Her work reflects a continued focus on integrating neuroscience research, imaging, and neuromodulation techniques to better understand and support recovery in neurological conditions.
