With a career spanning over five decades, Dr. Thatcher has made foundational contributions to the understanding of brain development, neural connectivity, and the clinical applications of electrophysiology.

He earned his PhD in Biopsychology from the University of Waterloo following undergraduate training in chemistry at the University of Oregon, and completed advanced postdoctoral training in neurobiology, functional neuroanatomy, and neurophysiology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and New York Medical College .

Dr. Thatcher has held numerous academic and leadership appointments, including Director of the NeuroImaging Applied Neuroscience Laboratories and Adjunct Professor of Neurology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine. He has also served as Director of Neuroimaging and EEG/MRI programs for the U.S. Department of Defense and Veterans Head Injury Program, contributing extensively to traumatic brain injury research and clinical care .

A prolific researcher and author, Dr. Thatcher has published hundreds of scientific papers and multiple textbooks, including the widely recognized Handbook of Quantitative Electroencephalography and EEG Biofeedback. His work has advanced multimodal neuroimaging techniques integrating EEG, MRI, and PET, and has helped shape modern approaches to neurofeedback, brain mapping, and clinical neuroscience.

Dr. Thatcher has received numerous prestigious honors, including lifetime achievement awards in QEEG and neurofeedback, the Hans Berger Award of Merit, and the Pioneer in Medicine Award from the Society for Brain Mapping and Therapeutics. He has served on multiple scientific advisory boards, NIH review panels, and international brain mapping initiatives, reflecting his global impact on neuroscience research and clinical innovation .

Through his continued research, teaching, and leadership, Dr. Thatcher remains at the forefront of advancing brain-based diagnostics and therapies, influencing clinicians and researchers worldwide.
